Chapter Fourteen
Silence.
That was the first thing I noticed when consciousness seeped into my dreams.
The room I was in was utterly, totally and completely silent. Not a whisper of noise or a ghost of sound. I stretched—the sound of my legs brushing over the sheet strangely loud—and reached for Miller.
The bed was empty yet the sheets were wrinkled from where he’d lain with me in the night. I recalled his body wrapped around mine and the heat of his steady breaths on my neck. I’d roused slightly when he’d eventually joined me after spending time with Nate, but then I’d settled into a deeper sleep in his arms.
I allowed a crack of light to enter my eyelids. I was on my side, facing the large window with its drawn brocade curtains that was next to the bed. A similar sliver of brightness sliced through their center, where they hadn’t been completely closed, and created a shard over the wooden floor.
I guessed it was late morning.
I yawned and sat, refreshed yet a little achy from the wild fucking in the shower and the night before. I tweaked my nipple, remembering how Miller had held me there as he’d come. Mmm, that had been good. Seriously good.
My mouth was dry, the need for tea was calling.
I slipped from the bed and brushed my teeth. I then showered—the scent of lavender would forevermore evoke erotic memories—and pulled on a thin white cotton dress. It had slim spaghetti straps, hugged my breasts in such a way a little cleavage was on show, and skimmed over my waist. I teamed it with flat sandals and piled my hair up high, off my neck.
A quick peek outside told me my wardrobe choice would be fine. Gone were the dishwater-gray skies of London and in their place crystal blue, holding a bright orb of sunshine.
I was as if I’d time traveled to another century as I descended the grand staircase. Become a character in a movie who’d woken up in another era. There was nothing modern around, barring the light bulbs, and the suits of armor’s attention seemed to follow me with slitted eyes.
Shay always did tell me I had way too vivid an imagination.
At the base of the stairs, I paused. I still couldn’t hear anything. I wondered which way it was to the kitchen or the living area.
I opted for right and walked along a stone-floored corridor that held several large portraits on the walls. They were all of stern-looking men and the frames were lavish and golden colored.
At the end was a door. I pushed it open. It was a dining room. More portraits hung on the walls, and there was an enormous table that would easily sit twenty people. Instead of chairs, there were dark wooden benches and at the far end of the room a fireplace so large I would likely be able to stand upright in it. Above it hung a faded tapestry depicting a battle scene.
The table was completely empty, though on the mantel was a selection of candles in various melted states.
